The difference between binge of Wellpenit and Reardon makes him an outsider because when he was at Wellpenit he could be his self because he knew he had no future. He’s an outsider at Reardon because everyone is white but here he is Indian. Also people at Wellpenit think he is a sellout because it seems he want to be white. One way in which Junior is presented as an outsider is through his dual experience of living in Wellpenit whilst studying in Reardon because nobody in Reardon has seen an Indian before. Whereas in Wellpenit and the Reservation he is considered white because he left to go to an all white school. This makes him an outsider because he has no more friends anymore and he cant relate to Indian tradition that much any more. He is also presented as an outsider at Reardon because not only is he the only Indian As well as this he is a victim of Racism and stereotypical comments mad on him. One way to show this is that just because Junior is Indian he is very dumb, disobedient, stupid and unruly. The language in the metaphorical quote ‘Part time Indian’ suggests he is living in two worlds which mean she can never be the same person in the same place. This suggest part time [Depending on where he is] he has to change between two cultures. A way to present he’s an outsider lies within his physical defects. This is one of many physical defects has. He also has lisp which leaves him singled out due to the fact he cant get his words across. This makes him very different in many ways as his white folks don’t have these defects. Because of his physical defects, he cant bond with the Reardon kids because all of the kids are good at sports so he cant really fit in. However Junior can can only play Basketball but not very good either. The quote ‘I was born with to much grease on my brain’ he’s not normal. He’s not normal because the Reardon kids don’t have any amount of brain grease in their skulls. He unwillingly has to manage and deal with much more and has to get on with it and sweep it under the carpet and get on in life.
A third way to present and suggest he is an outsider of society in Reardon School, is the fact that he is living in poverty. On page 88 there is a picture. It shows how much trouble, strife and struggle Junior has to go through as a kid to get to school and learn as child which I feel is really sad and unfortunate. There’s another instant that make Junior an outsider of which when he goes out with a group of friends for a school dance. They all decide to get pancakes after. Knowing himself, he knows he can’t afford much. He orders a lot of food knowing he can’t pay for it all. He is caught in the act however and Roger (one of Juniors many Reardon friends) decides to help him out by giving Junior 40 bucks to pay. The quoted question “Are you poor?” is really self-explanatory in the sense that know only is he poor, his friends now know. (Including his biggest crush, Penelope). Not only does this instant highlight how poor he really is on page 57 there’s another picture. It show the differences between a regular white folk and a regular Indian boy living on a reservation. The clothes such as the school focuses on how much Junior struggles through poverty. Where the white folk has nice fitting latest Jordan’s, Junior had the privileges of wearing tennis court shoes that don’t even fit him because they are way to massive for his feet to fit into.
The fact Junior is called Arnold at school and Junior on the Reservation suggest hes an outsider due to the fact that he has to switch between two names that fit two completely two different cultures. For example, when he is talking with his friends at School the character as we know him to be Junior is reffed to as Arnold. The reason for this is because he didn’t want to use a indian boy name at a new start at a all white school. And mainly because he wanted his name to sound posh at a all white school so he wouldn’t be singled out as an outsider anymore at his new school. The two name are a symbolic meaning that he maybe can’t be accepted as much as he is in the places he in. Arnold for example is a white name and in the reservation he wouldn’t really be accepted because the reservation occupants would think that Arnold (Junior) is a wanna be white folk.
From this 800 word essay you should able to understand the reasons on why Juniors life is hard and why he’s an outsider. You should also be able to tell that Juniors potential is held back and how he tries to make something of his life. He also how he makes others realises that completing your dream isn’t impossible when you’re held back by your family, your friends, you’re teachers and stereotypical comments people make.
